England and Netherlands are locking horns in Match 40 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, November 08 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first as openers Jonny Bairstow (15 off 17) and Dawid Malan added 48 runs for the first wicket off 42 balls.

The Dutch tasted their first success as Aryan Dutt got rid of Bairstow in the seventh over. His dismissal brought Joe Root at the crease who got involved in an 85-run stand with Malan. However, Root couldn’t convert his start into a big innings as he was bowled between his legs by Logan van Beek.

The 32-year-old was trying to play his trademark reverse scoop over third man. However, he ended up missing the ball altogether which went through his legs and dismantled his stumps resulting in an embarrassing dismissal. Root’s dismissal even left an England fan in the crowd distraught who made his disappointment evident with his reaction.

Earlier in the innings, Root managed to successfully execute the shot as he got four runs on the first ball of the 14th over. However, he failed to execute well on his second attempt which resulted in his dismissal on 28 (35). With his innings, Root continued his dismal run in the ongoing World Cup as he has managed to score just 216 runs from eight innings at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 90.

The star batter was the top scorer for his side in the 2019 edition as he scored 556 runs from 11 innings. Meanwhile, after Root’s dismissal, Malan was also dismissed shortly after for 87 (74). After the dup got dismissed, Ben Stokes scored his first hundred in ODI World Cup and played a magnificent innings of 108 (84). He was well supported by Chris Woakes (51 off 45) as the dup propelled England’s total to 339/9 in their allotted 50 overs.
