Rajasthan Royals returned to winnings ways with a thumping 57-run win over Delhi Capitals in their third Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) match on Sunday, April 8. Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal recorded another scintillating fifties to help Rajasthan score 199 runs while batting first and then Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal took three wickets to restrict Delhi to just 142/9.
Skipper Sanju Samson, who was the leading run-scorer for Rajasthan in the first two games this season, was dismissed on a duck against the Capitals. But the wicketkeeper batter was excellent behind the stumps, as he pulled off a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Prithvi Shaw and lightning-fast glovework to remove Axar Patel.
Furthermore, Samson also impressed everyone with his leadership skills which triggered the team's head coach Kumar Sangakkara to praise his captain's decisions to rotate bowling options and the overall team effort. This resulted in a magnificent win for the Royals.
Rajasthan Royals' skipper Sanju Samson reminded the head coach hilariously of his stunning catch
"Skipper, really, well captained today. It was brilliant to see how you marshalled the bowlers, and the decisions you took. You were not afraid to do it. I thought that was exceptional. Really well done," Sangakkara said in a team meeting after the game.
But Samson reminded the former Sri Lankan great to mention his mind-boggling catch in his speech that left the Royals' players in splits. Sangakkara was quick to praise Samson for his fantastic catch to dismiss Shaw and also apologized to the skipper with a smile on his face. "Sorry, forgot the catch. Fantastic catch. Brilliant," the Sri Lankan legend concluded.
After the game, Samson also revealed his role while batting and said that he took a few balls to settle in and paced his innings later on. He also praised Buttler's role to contribute quick early runs which have helped the Royals to produce good starts against Delhi and Hyderabad this season.
"Almost everything went to plan. I think me not scoring runs didn't go plan (laughs). The way I play this format I take a few balls to settle in and then go out there and express myself. Those 40-50 runs at a quick rate with Jos going through with his business. My role in the team is very clear. Just got the feel I would take that kind of a catch," Sanju Samson stated.
