India finally began their campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they locked horns with Australia in Match 5 on Sunday, October 08 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first. Indian seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj were phenomenal with the new ball as they didn’t allow Australian openers to break loose.

Bumrah gave the first blow to Australia as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the third over of the innings. On the second ball of the over, the speedster bowled a delivery angling into Mitchell Marsh making the Australian batter poke at it. However, he could only manage to edge to Virat Kohli at first slip who completed a spectacular catch diving to his left. As a result, the entire stadium erupted as India got their first wicket in the World Cup.

Ravindra Jadeja sparks a collapse in the middle overs

After the early blow, Steve Smith walked in at number three and got involved in a 69-run partnership with David Warner (41 off 52). Kuldeep Yadav broke the dangerous stand for India as he caught him off his own bowling. After the partnership ended, Ravindra Jadeja strangled Australia in the middle overs as he cleaned up Smith (46 off 71) with a beauty.

The left-arm spinner bowled from around the wicket as the ball came in with the angle to the Australian batter. However, it turned sharply and hit his off stump as Smith got squared up. Jadeja further removed Marnus Labuschagne (27 off 41) in his next over making him edge one to the wicketkeeper KL Rahul. Two balls later, Alex Carey also fell prey to the left-arm spinner as Australia were brought down to their knees at 119/5 after 29.4 overs.
