Team India are on top of South Africa on Day 1 of the second Test at Newlands, Cape Town as they bundled them out for 55 in the first session itself. Right-arm seamer Mohammed Siraj was at his impressive best as he picked up his career-best figures of 6/15 to bundle out the Proteas for their lowest score since 1933.

In reply, India got ahead of South Africa’s total with just one wicket down as captain Rohit Sharma made a valuable contribution of 39 (50). However, he couldn’t continue his innings as he edged one to the slips against Nandre Burger. His dismissal brought Virat Kohli to the crease who looked in fine form right from the word go scoring three boundaries in the first five balls.

The star batter survived a close lbw call in the 24th over of the Indian innings as he got struck on his pads against Marco Jansen. After the on-field umpire Ahsan Raza adjudged him not out, South Africa captain Dean Elgar reviewed the decision and the ball-tracking showed hitting on umpire’s call as Kohli survived.

After the end of the over, Elgar teased Kohli saying that he survived a close one. In reply, the former India skipper quipped that it was way higher than his contentious lbw call during the 3rd Test between the two teams at the same venue in 2022. “This was way higher than yours. Way higher than what Ash did to you in 2022,” Kohli was heard saying on the stump mic.

Notably, needing 212 runs to win to win the series by 2-1, South Africa were cruising at 70/1 after 22 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin, who came on to bowl the 23rd over, trapped Elgar in front of the stumps and the on-field umpire raised his finger. However, the decision was immediately reviewed and the ball tracking showed the ball going over the stumps.

The entire Indian team was in disbelief seeing the replay as Ashwin blurted out his frustration in the stump mic and said “Find better ways to win SuperSport.” Even KL Rahul was unhappy and accused the entire country of being against the Indian team. Meanwhile, captain Virat Kohli called out the broadcaster for always focusing on them while shining the ball.

From there on, India could never make a comeback as South Africa won the match by seven wickets and clinched the series 2-1.
