WBBL 2024: Alyssa Healy to miss remainder of tournament due to left knee injury, replacement announced

Sydney Sixers star and Australian skipper Alyssa Healy has dealt with a significant blow, sustaining a left knee injury that rules her out of the remainder of the ongoing Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024. The Sixers confirmed the development on Saturday, also raising doubts about her availability for Australia's upcoming home ODI series against India.

Healy’s injury woes have been a recurring issue in recent months. The 33-year-old entered the WBBL10 carrying a foot injury sustained during the Women’s T20 World Cup in October, where Australia fell short in the semi-finals against South Africa. Despite her efforts to recover, Healy struggled with form throughout the WBBL, managing only 11 runs in four innings.

"Alyssa Healy has sustained a left knee injury which will rule her out for the remainder of WBBL. She will continue with her rehabilitation over the coming fortnight under the care of CNSW and CA medical staff," the Sixers' statement read.

Frankie Nicklin to replace injured Alyssa Healy

The Sixers have named 19-year-old spin all-rounder Frankie Nicklin as Healy’s replacement. The Sixers, currently sixth on the points table, must win their remaining fixtures to secure a spot in the knockout phase.

The Sixers face a challenging schedule, starting with the highly anticipated Sydney Derby on Sunday. Without Healy and England’s Sophie Ecclestone, who is committed to international duties, the Sixers will incline heavily on skipper Ellyse Perry to anchor the team. Kate Pelle and Sarah Bryce are expected to share wicketkeeping responsibilities in Healy’s absence.

With only three wins from their first seven matches, the Sixers must overcome top-performing teams like the Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat to keep their campaign alive.

Healy’s injury could have a significant impact on Australia’s plans for the three-match ODI series against India starting December 5. If she remains unavailable, vice-captain Tahlia McGrath is expected to step in as the stand-in captain. The series, set to begin at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field, is a critical phase for the Australian team as they prepare for international commitments, including a tour to New Zealand later in December.
