Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) completed an exceptionally successful campaign in the 17th edition of the IPL (Indian Premier League). Finishing atop the standings in the group stages of the tournament, KKR went on to become the first side to reach the final of the competition and defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the summit clash to win their third IPL title. The side made a few changes to their squad ahead of the IPL 2024, with the most notable of all being the addition of former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the franchise’s mentor.
Under Gambhir’s mentorship, KKR went on to win the IPL 2024 in dominant fashion, and after an incredibly successful season, Gambhir came forward to lay out the franchise’s plans for the upcoming season. The 42-year-old revealed that they plan on helping KKR become the most successful side in the tournament’s history, surpassing Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
"We are still two trophies away from MI and CSK. I am content today, but we are still not the most successful IPL franchise. To do that, we need to win the tournament three more times, and that will require a lot of effort. Our next mission is to make KKR the most successful team in the IPL. There will be no better feeling than that. But, the journey towards that has only begun,” Gambhir told Sportskeeda.
At every step, there has been excitement: Gambhir
Furthermore, Gautam Gambhir talked about the thrill of reaching the knockout stages of the IPL and eventually going on to win it. He revealed that he is a very happy man sitting at home, and stated that when one wins the IPL, they start feeling really good about themselves.
"When you head into the IPL, your first thought is to reach the playoffs. When you are close to the playoffs, you think about top two. When you reach top two, you want to get to the final and then you want to win it. At every step, there has been excitement, challenges, and nervousness," KKR mentor said.
"Today, sitting at home, I am a very happy man. IPL is such a league where you cannot take any team lightly. It’s such a high-intensity tournament that when you win it, you start feeling really good about yourself," Gambhir concluded.
