After a rain-marred draw in the first Test against West Indies, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma stated that they could have gotten the job done, had there been some more time. They were optimistic for a favourable result in the second Test in Guyana but it wasn’t an easy task. The hosts restricted Proteas to 160 runs in the first innings, which put the team under immense pressure but the bowlers put up a stunning show to turn things around.

South Africa took a 16-run lead in the first innings and added 246 more with the bat in the second innings, courtesy of Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne’s half-centuries. In reply, West Indies could score only 222 runs, losing the match by 40 runs. Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada were brilliant with the ball, picking up three wickets each and with that, South Africa sealed the series 1-0.

After the win, Bavuma expressed confidence in the team and stated that they needed to keep up with the momentum to win more Test matches in the future. He believes that South Africa have got the players that are needed to succeed and also lauded the bowlers for bringing them back into the contest in both innings.

“The emotions were little bit up and down. Glad the weather held up. Both teams were in the game. We had to keep working hard. The game went our way, fortunately. With a bit of inexperience, you kind of expect that. We leant on to the bowlers to deliver for us. Rabada leading the pacers and the spin department was led by Keshav. We just need to keep building. We are an inexperienced team. The more the guys play, the more confident they will become. We can be a formidable side,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by News18.

After the win, South Africa moved to number five on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. On the other hand, West Indies are currently at the bottom of the table.
