New Zealand's limited overs captain Kane Williamson's grandmother has come out in his defence. The Kiwi skipper has received criticism from a fan for looking “completely disinterested in games for the past two years” before the BlackCaps' recent tour of Pakistan. However, Williamson's grandmother explained that people have their own ways of expressing and carrying themselves and their family does not go "yahooing around".

“I happen to be Kane Williamson's grandmother ... he’s one of 20 of my grandchildren,” Joan Williamson-Orr told Newstalk ZB’s Tim Roxborogh. “The person who called in I think was doing a little bit of stirring. They’re just not material to jump around and yahoo… people express themselves differently,” she added, referring to the rudeness of the critic who had called out Williamson.

Williamson-Orr, who was the mayor of Taupo Borough from 1986 to 1988 and Taupo District from 1988 to 2001, said her grandson has a very dry sense of humour. Speaking about his personality and how he handles criticism, Williamson-Orr said, “He’s a very lovely young man and he’s dedicated. A very humble man … he won’t care about criticism, I don’t think he even listens to it.”

On being asked about her feelings when Williamson was picked up to represent New Zealand, the former mayor admitted that she couldn't recall, and they as a family don't really like to make huge noises about anything. “We’re not a family that goes yahooing around…’that’s nice, that’s good, you’ve earned it’,” she said.

Meanwhile, before leading his side to an ODI series triumph, the 32-year-old scored a double century in the Test series against Pakistan. With two Tests against England in February approaching, he is just 39 runs away from surpassing Ross Taylor as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket.
