'We rely heavily on spinners, particularly Deepti Sharma' - Veda Krishnamurthy analyses India’s bowling ahead of T20 WC

India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign will begin on October 4 against New Zealand in Dubai. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led left for the United Arab Emirates on September 25 and they will play a couple of warm-up matches against West Indies and South Africa to finalise the playing XI and understand the conditions. They have struggled in ICC tournaments in the recent past but this time, with spin expected to play a major part, India are deemed to be one of the favourites.

Speaking about India’s chances, senior cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy stated that adjusting to the conditions of UAE will be crucial as she expects the spin unit to step up, particularly Deepti Sharma. The Bengal all-rounder did a phenomenal job for London Spirits and won them the Women’s Hundred and would be hoping to continue in the same form.

Veda also noted that Pooja Vastrakar will be key with the semi-new ball, hitting those hard lengths. She added that Renuka Singh Thakur can find success in any condition and overall, expects India to be a force to reckon with in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“Adjusting to the conditions is crucial when playing in the UAE, especially with this squad. Since the last tournament was in Bangladesh, not many changes have been made. It's a very spin-heavy team, and we rely heavily on spinners, particularly Deepti Sharma, who has been a key bowler for us,” Veda told Star Sports.

“With the fast bowlers, especially Pooja Vastrakar coming in with the semi-new ball and hitting those hard lengths, it's worked well for India. It's all about how they start, and they need Renuka to fire, regardless of the conditions. If they manage that, I think India will be very dominant in this World Cup,” she added.

Apart from New Zealand, India will also play against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia. The top two teams from that group will then qualify for the semi-finals. The final will be hosted on October 20 in Dubai.
