Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka, starting October 13. The senior players - Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer and Akeal Hosein opted out of the series as the selectors have named a few uncapped players who impressed in the recent edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Terrance Hinds, who picked up eight wickets in as many games and Shamar Springer, who picked up 12 in nine games in the ongoing CPL, have been included in the T20I series following their splendid performance. Meanwhile, head coach Daren Sammy confirmed that the senior cricketers wanted to opt out of the series following a hectic CPL. Some of them are also dealing with injuries and are currently in rehabilitation.

“The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing out for various reasons, including a need for rest and rehabilitation from injury. We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka,” Sammy was quoted as saying by Cricket West Indies.

Jewel Andrew, on the other hand, has earned his maiden call-up in the West Indies ODI squad. The 17-year-old has played only three List-A games and scored 165 runs at an average of 55. Explaining his inclusion, Sammy said that the goal is to give opportunities to talented young cricketers and added that Jewel has earned his place in the team.

“As we continue to build our ODI team, this tour offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate strategies and give opportunities to emerging talent. We are excited to see young players like Jewel Andrew, who has earned his place as an exciting prospect for the future,” Sammy said.
