After having a splendid season with Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, Sanju Samson made it to India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. The keeper-batter made 531 runs in 16 matches in the cash-rich league and finished fifth in the Orange Cap list. There were a lot of discussions regarding the keeper-batter role as KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik too were in reckoning. However, Samson proved his mettle in key matches and finally got an opportunity in the national team.

Speaking about his experience so far with the team, the Kerala-born cricketer mentioned that it was like a dream come true moment for him. The cricketer noted that he is working hard in the gym and in the nets and is prepping well ahead of the mega tournament. Samson revealed that he didn’t have to motivate himself and things automatically fell in place. The 29-year-old also noted the importance of having Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the team and stated that he gets inspired and motivated by being around them.

“Right from the moment I landed here (in the USA), IPL has been completely off (from my mind) and I am in a completely different stage, and I am telling myself ‘you are somewhere where lots and lots of people dream about’,” Samson told BCCI.

“I thought to myself, ‘what do I need to do?’ I need to do gym sessions, I need to do recovery, I need to do net sessions, and mentally I didn’t have to motivate myself. Automatically things were supposed to happen and it happened. When you get into the atmosphere and when you meet Mr. Rohit Sharma and Mr. Virat Kohli, then you get inspired, then you get motivated. There is no looking back actually, there is only looking front - how can Sanju Samson help the Indian team win games,” he added.

Notably, Samson made just one run in the warm-up game against Bangladesh ahead of the T20 World Cup. He opened the innings alongside Rohit but failed to impress. With Virat Kohli expected to play against Ireland on June 5, Samson may have to sit out as the first-choice keeper, Rishabh Pant, looked in fantastic touch against Bangladesh.
