The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings won the Indian Premier League 2023 title on Monday night as they defeated the defending champions Gujarat Titans. CSK earned a record-equalling fifth IPL trophy, sharing the record with Mumbai Indians, who won all five of their trophies while captained by Rohit Sharma. Both Dhoni and Rohit are rightfully regarded as the best captains in the tournament's history, but former Pakistan captain Salman Butt made an intriguing remark when asked to compare the two.
While asked to compare Dhoni and Rohit’s fitness, the former Pakistan captain virtually laughed before asserting that there is a "world of difference" between them. He wasn't specifically addressing the CSK captain, but he strongly criticised the Indian skipper for failing to keep up with the higher levels of fitness.
He affirmed that the two are completely distinct. Rohit Sharma, India's captain, possesses an outstanding title. However, In every way, he should set a positive example, and fitness is essential. He should have the authority to demand things from his teammates as a captain. When it comes to him, one area where he possibly might enhance is his fitness which will additionally enhance his batting and confidence.
"There's a world of difference between the two. Rohit Sharma has a big designation; he's the captain of India. He should be leading by example in all aspects, and fitness is a very important aspect. As a captain, when you are in a position to demand something from your teammates, you should have them yourself. You should be top of the line,” he said on one of the live youtube sessions while responding to his fan quiery.
I don't know why Indian captain isn't fit enough: Butt
“When you look at Rohit Sharma, you realise that fitness is one aspect where he can be a lot better. It will improve his batting and confidence as well. But we are talking about it for a long time now. I don't know why he isn't fit enough. Maybe he knows the reason himself,” he further added.
At 41, Dhoni has often confined himself to the role of a late finisher, batting at the death. On the other hand, he continued to be lightning-fast behind the wickets. The verification of this was found in the IPL final recently.
