The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced India’s squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. It is worth noting that India will begin their World Cup campaign by taking on Australia on October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Hosting the tournament completely for the first time in history, India are considered heavy favourites to take the title home and break their dreaded ICC curse.

However, the Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup is vastly different from the squad that travelled to England for the 2019 ODI World Cup. As many as seven players who travelled to England in 2019 will not be featured in the same tournament in 2023.

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar featured for India in in 2019, however, none of these seven will represent India in the 2023 ODI World Cup

Dhawan, who was an integral part of India’s 2019 squad has not played an ODI since Decmber last year while all-rounder Vijay Shankar's last ODI was in the 2019 World Cup itself. The 32-year-old was a surprise addition for team India in 2019, but he will not be featuring in the upcoming World Cup.

Former captain MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, and is only active in the IPL (Indian Premier League) currently. Meanwhile, Kedar Jadhav, who was picked for the 2019 World Cup, is currently inactive in international cricket as well, with his last ODI being against New Zealand in February 2020.

Star wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, on the other hand, played his last ODI as the semi-final against New Zealand in 2019. The 38-year-old is often seen doing commentary and competing in domestic tournaments. Ace spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is a significant absentee from India’s 2023 World Cup squad. The 33-year-old has been an important player for the national team in recent years but missed out on the World Cup squad.

Furthermore, pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the absentees from the 15-man squad that was announced as well. Bhuvneshwar last played an ODI game in January 2022 and has not featured for India in the format ever since.

Team India’s 15-member squad for 2023 ODI World Cup: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.
