‘While there's still a glimmer of hope, I'll keep going for it’ - Glenn Maxwell on Test cricket dream

Flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell hasn’t given up on the Test dream. The 36-year-old received his Baggy Green in 2013 and wore it seven times before he was dropped and was never considered again. 2017 was the last time when he played Test cricket but Maxwell remains optimistic that the chances will arrive again and he wants to stay ready for it.

Speaking on the same, Maxwell stated that there’s still a glimmer of hope and he wants to go after it. Notably, the all-rounder is currently not in the scheme of things despite Cameron Green being ruled out of of upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He hasn’t played first-class cricket since 2023 and that is one of the primary reasons why he is not being considered. However, Maxwell is hopeful to change that sooner than later.

“I think if I gave up on that Test dream now, I don't think I'd be doing justice to that younger Glenn Maxwell who was dying to put on the baggy green when he was a kid. And I think while there's still a glimmer of hope, I'll keep going for it,” Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo.

“I think the hard thing with Test cricket is, when I grew up, that's all I wanted to do. I definitely got my chance at Test level a bit prematurely. It all happened really fast when I got my chance to debut. It was just a whirlwind. I had no idea what I was doing. I probably hadn't had the experience at first-class level that I would have liked,” he added.

Maxwell opens up on turbulent relationship with Justin Langer

During Justin Langer’s era as head coach of the Australian team, Maxwell was excluded from the Test tour in the UAE and was advised to fake an elbow injury. During one of the practice sessions, he also faced a barrage of bouncers, which he felt was directed by the head coach. Despite all that, the all-rounder revealed having a good relationship with Langer and talked briefly about how he felt while playing under him.

“We're still on great terms. We had a really good friendship, and I suppose his coaching tenure at the back end, I probably didn't get out of him exactly what I probably needed at that time,” Maxwell said.
