Afghanistan’s young batting sensation, Sediqullah Atal, played a crucial knock in the do-or-die game against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Lahore.
Born on August 12, 2001, Atal burst into the domestic circuit at a young age. His T20 debut came on September 7, 2020, for the Kabul Eagles in the Shpageeza Cricket League. Before that, he was part of Afghanistan’s squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he scored 59 runs in two games.
In October 2021, he made his List A debut for Band-e-Amir Region in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament. His consistent performances in domestic cricket earned him a place in Afghanistan’s ODI squad for the 2021 series against Pakistan.
However, due to political unrest in Afghanistan, the series was postponed. When the series was rescheduled as a T20I contest in early 2023, the southpaw was again named in the squad and made his T20I debut against Pakistan in March 2023.
In May 2024, he was named a reserve player for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. His breakthrough moment came in October 2024 during the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where he scored 368 runs in five matches at an average of 122.66 with a strike rate of 145. His performances helped Afghanistan A secure their maiden title, earning him the Player of the Tournament award.

In the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he made a significant contribution in the match against Australia at Gaddafi Stadium. His 85-run knock was instrumental in stabilizing Afghanistan’s innings, though he was eventually dismissed by Spencer Johnson. His knock was laced with six boundaries and three sixes.
Despite his stellar performances, Atal remained unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction. With a base price of INR 75 lakh, he could not secure a contract as franchises prioritized more experienced international players. However, he still has a chance to feature in the tournament if any team picks him as an injury replacement. Atal has already represented Afghanistan in all three formats, featuring in nine ODIs, a Test, and nine T20Is.
