Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 15-member squad for the side’s two-match Test series against the hosts Australia scheduled to held on November 30, 2022. Interestingly the selectors decided to call up young sensation, Tagenarine Chanderpaul for the forthcoming test series to don the national outfit.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul happens to be the eldest son of the Windies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Like Shivnarine, Tagenarine too is a southpaw who brings rich first-class form and has displayed some terrific outings for the side’s he has represented so far.
Tagenarine was picked as a reserve batter for the home series against Bangladesh earlier this year. However, the left hander is expected to open along with skipper Kraigg Brathwaite in the forthcoming series down under.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul in numbers
In the 2021-22 West Indies four-day championship, he was the second-highest run-getter scoring 439 runs in eight innings at an average of 73.16. Moreover, he has clubbed 2669 first-class runs at an average of 34.21 with five hundreds that includes his highest score of 184.
The 26-year-old first provided evidence of his burgeoning talent in the Under-19 World Cup in the UAE in 2014, slamming 293 runs in six outings including a ton and two half-centuries. In the tour to Bangladesh, he scored a sensational 59, and later a 49 and 109 not out against Bangladesh A. One of the lesser known facts is that Tagenarine is ambidextrous with the ball which essentially translates to him bowling with both the left and right hand.
Like his father, the young southpaw has a high backlift with fierce focus on the crease that can help destroy rival sides swiftly just with his calmness. West Indies have a terrific young opener who can be a versatile player and play attacking and defensive cricket as per the requirements of the game. The player has developed that knack at such a young age and will look to break some of the records set by his father, Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
