WI vs IND: Ravichandran Ashwin registers unique record in Dominica, becomes 1st Indian to dismiss father-son duo

Nothing has gone the way of the West Indies after skipper Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica in the first Test. Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul got their team off to a cautious start but the latter departed at the individual score of 12 with 31 runs on the board for the home side.

The talented southpaw, who is the son of the legendary Shivnarine Chanderpaul, was dismissed by India's premier off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin. The experienced bowler struck in his third over as he castled Chanderpaul with a beautifully tossed-up delivery.

Interestingly, Ashwin dismissed Shivnarine Chanderpaul 12 years ago in Delhi. The Tamil Nadu bowler was making his Test debut in that game. He trapped Chanderpaul senior plumb in front of the stumps on that occasion. After dismissing Tagenarine, Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to dismiss a father-son duo.

The 36-year-old also broke the record for most bowled dismissals in Tests by an Indian bowler, as he overtook Anil Kumble's haul of 94 wickets.

India dominate proceedings on Day 1

The visitors ruled the roost in the first session on Day 1. At lunch, West Indies lost four wickets and managed to score just 68 runs in 28 overs. Ashwin scalped the wickets of Chanderpaul and Brathwaite while Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Raymon Reifer and Jermaine Blackwood, respectively.

Soon after lunch, the West Indies slipped further as Ravindra Jadeja struck again to dismiss Joshua Da Silva. The wicketkeeper-batter could only manage a couple of runs during his 13-ball stay. India would have hoped to begin their World Test Championship 2023-2025 cycle on a positive note after losing the last edition's final in June to Australia. They have looked quite sharp on the field and would aim to build on a good start as the game goes on. Earlier in the day, India handed maiden Test caps to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan. It would be interesting to see how the two youngster fare with the bat when the opportunity arrives.
