The West Indies and South Africa continued their ongoing Test series by facing off on day 1 of the second Test. Both sides took centre stage at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on August 15. The clash began with South Africa coming in to bat first after winning the toss.

The side got off to a horrid start as openers Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi were dismissed for 14 and one run, respectively. Tristan Stubbs scored 26 runs in 65 deliveries, alongside skipper Temba Bavuma, who was sent back for a duck.

Furthermore, David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne scored 28 and 21 runs, respectively, with Dane Piedt, who was the highest run-getter for his side in the scoring, staying unbeaten on a score of 38 runs. The West Indies bowling attack put in a commendable effort and limited the Proteas to a score of 160 runs.

Shamar Joseph was the highest wicket-taker for the hosts in the first innings, with five wickets to his name. Jayden Seales took three wickets with Jason Holder and Gudakesh Motie taking one wicket each as well.

As the West Indies came out to bat, the side saw skipper Kraigg Brathwaite dismissed for just three runs, with Mikyle Louis getting sent back to the pavilion for a duck. Keacy Carty attempted to stabilise the innings but only managed to score 26 runs before he was dismissed.

Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge failed to make an impact, and they were dismissed for one and four runs, respectively, alongside Jason Holder, who finished day 1 unbeaten on a score of 33 runs.

As the day ended, the West Indies found themselves on a score of 97 runs with the loss of seven wickets. The side trails by 63 runs, and they will hope to minimise the trail as day 2 rolls around.
