The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a lucrative deal for the parties interested in acquiring Women's Indian Premier League (WIPL) franchises. According to the Invitation To Tender (ITT) released by the apex cricket board, the owners of the franchises will be awarded 80% of the revenue for the first five years (2023-27).
The BCCI released an Invitation to Tender (ITT) for owning and operating a team in WIPL earlier this month. The ITT is available for payment of INR 5,00,000 plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. However, the clauses and terms are now revealed, with lucrative offers for the interested parties.
The initial five years of the competition will follow the revenue-sharing arrangement of 80-20 in favor of the franchises. In the following five years, it will be 60-40 and eventually 50-50 from 2033 to 2037, a plan similar to that in the men's IPL. The aforementioned revenue will be largely generated through league sponsorship deals and media rights, which will be up for grabs in an auction later this month on January 16.
BCCI will only deal directly with the State Associations and at no time will have any communication with player agents
The inaugural edition of the WIPL is slated to commence in March this year, featuring five teams. An additional side will be included in the competition after the first three years. The aforementioned ITT is available for purchase up to January 21, however, a consortium will not be allowed to own a team if they do not have a net worth of Rs 1000 crores.
The player auction is slated to be held in February with a base price ranging from Rs 30 - 50 Lakh for capped players and Rs 10- 20 Lakh for uncapped players. The board has made its stance clear regarding the auction, stating that they will not be entertaining talks with any player agents and will only deal with the state associations.
"Please note that, at this stage of the process, BCCI will only deal directly with the State Associations and at no time will have any communication with player agents or managers. Any failure by a player to abide by this condition will (unless BCCI in its sole discretion decides otherwise) result in the player's name being withdrawn with immediate effect from the Auction Register and/or Auction List (as appropriate)," a BCCI communique said.
