Women's Asia Cup 2024: Anjum Chopra wants India to be 'consistent' in fielding

Indian Women’s team showed a dominant performance against South Africa in their recent tour to India, as the hosts whitewashed the visitors in the ODI series, won the one-off Test, and levelled the T20I series. While the batter and bowlers were at their best, the fielding came under intense scanner as the mishaps were evident and the same has been highlighted by former India cricketer Anjum Chopra. 

Chopra stated that the Indian team looked rusty on the field against South Africa. Her criticism stemmed from the fact that several catches were dropped by different players. Meanwhile, the Women in Blue are in Sri Lanka for the ninth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. Chopra condemned the fact that the Indian team's off days on the field are a persistent issue.

“When you are playing international cricket, it goes without saying that you have to be consistent. There are no two ways that you field well one day and you don’t field well the other day. The rarity needs to be that you had an off-color day,” Chopra was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“It cannot be that you field well one day and we talk about ‘Wow how you fielded so well one day.’ So, that consistency has to come. You can always drop a catch. But it’s like you pat your back and say, ‘Okay, it doesn’t matter next time’. Or you say, ‘this is becoming a little too consistent and that’s not the way to go’, because we have already seen the result,” she added.

Meanwhile, India will be playing against Pakistan in their first game of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium in Dambulla on July 19. It is worth noting that, India are defending the title this time around and have seven titles to their name showing no mercy to their counterparts. They are placed in Group A, with Nepal and United Arab Emirates as other teams.
