Team India suffered its first loss of the ongoing Asia Cup as they faced a defeat against Bangladesh in their final Super Four stage clash on Friday, September 15. Aiming to chase down a target of 266 runs, India barely fell short and lost the game by six runs.
It could be said that the subpar batting performances during the run chase led to India’s doom against Bangladesh. However, during the second innings, there was one performance that stood out. The knock of star opener Shubman Gill kept India in the game and helped them reach within touching distance of a win.
Scoring 121 runs in 133 deliveries, Gill played a brilliant knock and stood at the crease for a long time, attempting to win the game for the Indian team. However, he fell short in the end, as India lost the game. After the loss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma did not shy away from heaping praise on Gill’s valiant knock. He stated that Gill has the ability to back his game and knows how to pace the innings properly.
"It was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows how exactly he wants to play and pace the game. Very clear in his mind and knows what he wants to do for the team. Just look at his form for the year and the past. It was been just brilliant. Solid against the new ball, works extremely hard and there are no optional practice as well," Rohit Sharma was quoted as saying by India Today.
India take on Sri Lanka in Asia Cup final
It is worth noting that the loss against Bangladesh would have no consequences for India. The side already qualified for the summit clash of the Asia Cup 2023 after defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage earlier.
The final of the tournament will be held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 17. India will be facing Sri Lanka in the final, and the side will hope for a similar outcome as before.
