BBL 2023: Twitter goes berserk after Umpire signals six for ball hitting the roof
The BBL match was being played at a stadium with a roof, where on most occasions the maximums were being struck straight up to the roof
Twitter was abuzz with reactions after the Umpire, in the BBL clash between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars, granted six runs to the batting side after their batter hit the ball straight up to the roof.
The match was taking place at the Docklands Stadium, also currently known by naming rights sponsorship as Marvel Stadium, which is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in Melbourne. The stadium consists a dome-like structure which makes up the roof.
"Roof League going on": Twitter bashes the rule of granting the six runs
The incident took place in the 16th over. Melbourne Stars were chasing a target of 163 and at that juncture, they needed 37 runs to win from 30 balls. Tom Rogers of Melbourne Renegades came in to bowl the over. He delivered the ball to the Stars batter, Beau Webster. The batter played a lofted shot, so much so that the ball went vertically straight up to strike the roof of the stadium and then landed on the ground. The Umpire took no time to declare it as six runs.
Meanwhile, Twitterati was quick to react to it, as they found this mode of scoring runs as extremely bizzare.
Here's how Twitter reacted :-
During the match when this incident occurred, even the commentators were heard saying that this shouldn't have been granted six runs. It should either have been given out or be called a dead ball. It would encourage batters to keep scoring runs this way.
