With the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) scheduled to begin from March 4, the Mumbai Indians have announced Harmanpreet Kaur as their captain for the inaugural season of the tournament.
Kaur’s captaincy had led the Indian team to greater heights, and Mumbai Indians will hope that she can have a similar impact when the WPL gets underway. The 33-year-old has amassed 3058 runs in 151 T20I matches and is one of the best players in world cricket. She was brought in by the MI franchise for INR 1.8 crore and was the third-most expensive player for their side.
Mumbai Indians will be playing the first match of their tournament against Gujarat Giants in the curtain raiser at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on March 4. It will be interesting to see how MI lines up against Gujarat, as they have a plethora of talent in their squad, including the likes of Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, and Amelia Kerr amongst others.
We are thrilled to have Harmanpreet as the captain: Nita Ambani
MI owner Nita Ambani expressed her thoughts after Kaur’s appointment as captain. "We are thrilled to have Harmanpreet as the captain of Mumbai Indians’ first-ever women’s cricket team. As the national captain, she has led the Indian Women’s team to some of their most exciting wins. And I am sure that with Charlotte and Jhulan’s support, she will inspire our MI women’s team to play their best cricket, display a sense of pride, and bring even more glory to women in sports," she said in a release.
"We are so looking forward to the beginning of this new chapter for MI! I can’t wait to see our girls play the fearless and entertaining MI brand of cricket that our fans adore. More power to Harmanpreet and the entire MI team on this exciting journey ahead!" she added.
