WPL 2023: Marizanne Kapp bags best bowling figures in ongoing event; wife Dané van Niekerk cheers from stands
Marizanne Kapp registered the best bowling figures of the WPL so far.
After suffering an embarrasing defeat by Mumbai Indians in their third game, Delhi Capitals were determined to make a strong comeback in their fourth match against Gujarat Giants on Saturday, March 11 at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
Gujarat Giants captain Sneh Rana won the toss and elected to bat first. Bowling first for the first time in the tournament, Meg Lanning handed the new ball to Marizanne Kapp and she didn’t disappoint as he blew away Giants with her breathtaking spell. The South African all-rounder ended up picking a fifer in the first seven overs of the match as Giants were reduced to 33/6 at 6.5 overs.
Kapp got into the act in the first over itself, cleaning up Sabbineni Meghana on the second ball of the match and gave an early blow to Giants. She further picked up the prized scalp of her compatriot Laura Wolvaardt in her second over dismissing her for just 1.
Ashleigh Gardner became the third victim for the 33-year-old star all-rounder as she was trapped in front of her stumps and returned to the pavilion for a golden duck. Harleen Deol also had no answer to the pacer as she also got out LBW (Leg Before Wicket).
Kapp completed her fifer in the seventh over of the innings as she destroyed the stumps of Sushma Verma. She finished her spell with figures of 5/15 in 4 overs making her the third bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in the WPL so far.
Her figures are also the best bowling performance in the tournament. The moment was even more special for the Proteas cricketer as she was being cheered on by her partner Dané van Niekerk from the stands.
Gujarat are 67/7 in 13 overs with Kim Garth 13* (15) and Tanuja Kanwar 1*(4) batting in the middle. Apart from Kapp, Radha Yadav and Shikha Pandey had also picked up one wicket each till the 13th over. Delhi are ranked second on the points table with two wins to their name in three matches. The Meg Lanning-led side will look to further strengthen its position in the top-two by beating Gujarat in their fourth match.
