The second edition of the WPL (Women’s Premier League) finally began with a thrilling contest between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. With the tournament underway, it was noticed that the marquee competition is following the old rules of the Decision Review System (DRS). At least in one particular clause.

The tournament will follow the old rules of a stumping appeal, which have been internationally abandoned. The old rules stated that those caught behind will also be checked when an appeal for a stumping is made. The same rule is in play in the WPL 2024, but not in international cricket.

The reason for the rule’s persistence is due to the BCCI’s (Board of Control for Cricket in India) domestic season, which began in September, but the ICC changed the rule only in December last year. Furthermore, it is not clear whether the BCCI will be making the change in the upcoming season of the IPL (Indian Premier League), which is slated to begin on March 22.

Mumbai Indians get off to flying start to WPL 2024

The 2024 season of the WPL began with Mumbai Indians taking on Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, February 23.

The Capitals got off to subpar start as openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma scored 31 and one run, respectively. Alice Capsey played a resilient knock, scoring 75 runs in 53 deliveries. Jemimah Rodrigues added 42 runs on the board as Delhi Capitals posted a total of 171 runs in the first innings.

As for Mumbai Indians, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr took two wickets each, with Shabnim Ismail striking once as well.

Aiming to chase down the target, Mumbai Indians opened the innings with Yastika Bhatia scoring 57 runs in 45 deliveries after Hayley Matthews’ dismissal for a duck. Furthermore, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored 55 runs as Sajeevan Sajana finished the game with a six, as Mumbai Indians won the game by four wickets.
