UP Warriorz registered their first win of the Women’s Premier League 2024 as they beat Mumbai Indians Women by seven wickets in Match 6 on Wednesday, February 28 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. After being put in to bat first, Mumbai posted a good score of 161/6 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, UP chased down the target in 16.3 overs to clinch their first win of the season.

UP Captain Alyssa Healy (33 off 29) got her team off to a terrific start with opening partner Kiran Navgire (57 off 31) as the duo added 94 runs for the first wicket off 56 balls. Their massive stand was broken by Amelia Kerr who got Navgire stumped in the tenth over while Issy Wong (2/30) got rid of Tahlia McGrath (1 off 4) and Healy to leave UP on 98/3 after 10.4 overs.

After three quick blows, Grace Harris (38* off 17) and Deepti Sharma (27* off 20) took matters into their own hands and took UP over the line with their unbeaten 65-run stand off 36 balls.

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, Mumbai got off to a good start with openers Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia (26 off 22) adding 50 runs for the first wicket off 48 balls. Bhatia failed to convert her start falling prey to Grace Harris in the eighth over.

Hayley Matthews top scored for MI with her knock of 55

However, Matthews continued to take her innings forward and added another 42 runs off 29 balls for the second wicket with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (19 off 14). Brunt also failed to capitalize on her start getting involved in an unfortunate run-out due to miscommunication with Matthews.

Following her dismissal, Matthews also departed shortly after scoring a splendid fifty (55 off 47). Valuable contributions from Amelia Kerr (23 off 16), Pooja Vastrakar (18 off 12) and Issy Wong (15* off 6) took Mumbai to 161/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Here’s what the two captains and the Player of the Match said after the game:

Losing Captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Mumbai Indians, said:

Found out yesterday evening (that I was captaining). Quick turnaround but felt quite prepared. (On the pitch) It does come on a bit better in the second innings. They came hard at it and they took the game away from us in the first six overs. No concerns (on their record batting first). Just a matter of time before it comes out (right). Not panic stations yet. We did not execute (with the ball). They came out hard and made it difficult for us. She (Wong) made a big impact, picking up two quick wickets. Grace and Deepti put up a good partnership and did not allow us to settle. (On their next game against RCB) Looking forward to it, to hearing the noise and feeling the energy. Hopefully we can put in a good performance against RCB.

Winning Captain, Alyssa Healy, UP Warriorz, said:

Over the moon to get on the board and to beat a quality side like MI. girls bounced back well from a disappointing night. Apparently, Kiran went to the boss yesterday and said she wanted to open (smiles). (Kiran) Probably not (have opened) but things happen for a reason. (On the score MI got) To be fair, they got 25 too many. We let a few opportunities slip. Credit to the batters for going out there and for getting the job done. (On the spin-heavy attack) I don't think it is one-dimensional at all, they (the spinners) are all different and play a different role. (How they intend to celebrate) We get cake, that is what we do in India and that is what Sophie Ecclestone is most excited about.

Player of the Match, Kiran Navgire, UP Warriorz, said:

She (Alyssa Healy) had told me before that I could open so I had prepared mentally. After the innings ended, the head coach told me I was opening and I got very happy. (On who she wanted to target) Nothing like that. I was trying to play according to the merit of the ball. (On attacking the spinners) That is my strength and I try to play to my strengths, that is my plan.
