WPL 2025 to be played across four venues from February 7
Vadodara's newly-built Kotambi Stadium will host one of the legs of the 2025 edition.
The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 is set to go underway on February 07. This will be the third edition of the franchise league that will feature five teams - Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W), Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCB-W), Delhi Capital Women (DC-W), Gujarat Giants (GG-W), and UP Warriorz (UPW), who will be competing for the prized silverware.
The first two seasons of the WPL had a great reception, and got the people excited about what will follow in the upcoming season as well. The 2023 edition was hosted by Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, while the second season went to Bengaluru and New Delhi. However, this time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a four-venue plan for the upcoming season.
The board vice president Rajeev Shukla, on Sunday, January 12, confirmed the development regarding the third edition of the most-valued women's T20 tournament.
“It will be played across four venues. The Mumbai leg will be played at Brabourne Stadium,” Shukla was reported as saying by Sportstar.
The four venues for this year's edition of the tournament are Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium, Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Vadodara's newly-built Kotambi Stadium, and the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Notably, the latest cricketing venue in Vadodara has been in the know of late for hosting India Women's ODI series against the West Indies. The same ground is also hosting the knockout stages of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25.
The last two seasons of the WPL
The inaugural season of the WPL in 2023 was won by Mumbai, who beat the Delhi-based franchise. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the side beat Delhi by seven wickets to become the original champions of the multi-team tournament. The Orange Cap was clinched by Meg Lanning, the runner-ups' skipper, while Hayley Matthews from the winning side ended up as the Purple Cap holder for the opening edition.
After a substandard campaign in 2023, RCB Women surprised everyone with their comeback in the following season of the tournament. Under the leadership of star cricketer Smriti Mandhana, the Bengaluru-based team won the finale, and ultimately lifted the trophy. Once again, Lanning & Co. were on the losing side. Ellyse Perry got the hold of the Orange Cap, while off-spinner Shreyanka Patil took the most wickets. RCB will now be looking to defend their title.
