WTC 2023-25 Points Table: Here's a look at latest standings after New Zealand vs England Test series
New Zealand won the third Test against England by 423 runs on Tuesday, December 17.
New Zealand ended their three-match series against England with a comfortable 423-run victory in the final Test at Hamilton, giving a fitting farewell to veteran pacer Tim Southee. Though the Kiwis claimed this win, they lost the series 2-1 as the visitors had already secured victories in the first two Tests.
Chasing a gigantic target of 658 runs, England crumbled to 234 all out after lunch on the fourth day. Captain Ben Stokes, struggling with a hamstring injury sustained on Monday, did not bat in the second innings. Mitchell Santner, who produced an all-round performance to dismantle the visiting team's batting line-up, was named the Player of the Match. Santner scored 76 and 49 and claimed figures of 4/85 in England’s second innings.
England’s final innings saw young Jacob Bethell score a brilliant 76, his third half-century of the series. Joe Root notched up his 65th Test fifty before falling to Santner for 54. However, England’s hopes faded quickly after lunch. Will O’Rourke had Harry Brook caught in the slips for just one, registering a rare failure for the Player of the Series. Brook’s contributions earlier in the series were crucial to England’s victories in Christchurch and Wellington.
Gus Atkinson's late flourish 43 off 41 balls, including seven boundaries and a six, couldn't see the visitors go over the line. England’s final three wickets fell in just 12 deliveries, sealing New Zealand’s biggest-ever win by runs and making this the fourth-heaviest defeat by runs in England’s Test history.
Meanwhile, Southee claimed two wickets in England’s second innings to finish his illustrious career with 391 Test wickets, second only to Sir Richard Hadlee among New Zealanders. Southee narrowly missed the milestone of 100 sixes in Test cricket, ending with 98.
