WTC 2023-25 Points Table: Here's a look at latest standings after India's first Test win in Perth against Australia

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 got underway with the Perth Test as Australia hosted India for the first of the five-match series. India accepted the Aussie's invitation with both hands, and under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, the hosts handed back a loss by 295 runs to the Pat Cummins-led side.

At the start of the match, Cummins would have thought his bowling unit did wonders to get India bundled out for just 150 on the opening day. However, what followed was a nightmare. Bumrah & Co. retaliated with a fiery spell with the red cherry to weave magic at the Perth Stadium that got the opposition done for just 104 runs, giving India a 46-run lead.

In the second innings, the Indian opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were simply brilliant. They faced the new ball with sheer comfort, and made it old enough to stitch a 201-run stand. Rahul got after a well-compiled 77, coming on the back of a 36 in the first innings. The innings must have boosted the Bengaluru-born's confidence, after his place in the side was under questionable remarks. Jaiswal, though, did not let Rahul's wicket lose his own momentum, as the southpaw went onto score a daddy hundred of 161.

Later the onus was taken upon by star batter Virat Kohli, who came in the series on the back of a lean patch, averaging just 25.00 in his last five Tests. Kohli continued his love affair with Australia and made the Perth turf his own with an unbeaten century off just 143 balls. This was Virat's 81st international ton, and 10th against Australia, the most by any player versus them.

Bumrah called the Indian team back right after Kohli's hundred, which set Australia a mammoth target of 534. The Australians would have hoped for a better faring at the crease, but the Indian skipper spoiled the party instantly as Nathan McSweeney departed on the fourth ball of the chase. A couple of more wickets fell on the third day, and the fourth day was no different with the ball for the Indians.

Travis Head did attempt to put up a show with his 89, but it wasn't meant to be, he received little to no support from the other end. Washington Sundar took care of the tail-enders, chipping in with three wickets. Debutant Harshit Rana got the number of Alex Carey to hand India a much-needed victory in the context of the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

India have bettered their position and dethroned Australia from the top to regain the first position on the standings. Out of 15 matches in the cycle, the Indian team has managed to win nine with a points percentage (PCT) of 61.11, while Australia have eight wins in 13 matches they have played so far.
