Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in the history books as he scored a magnificent hundred on his debut on Day 2 of the first Test between India and West Indies at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica. The southpaw became the 17th Indian batter to reach the three-figure mark on his debut. Having finished Day 2 on an unbeaten 143, Jaiswal was just 57 runs short of becoming just the 14th player to score a double hundred on Test debut.

However, the 21-year-old fell 29 runs short of the landmark as he edged a delivery by Alzarri Joseph straight to wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva on Day 3. As a result, Jaiswal’s magnificent knock ended on 171 (387) studded with 16 fours and a six.

Notably, it was the third-highest score by an Indian batter on Test debut. Notably, opener Shikhar Dhawan is at the helm of the list with his knock of 187 against Australia in 2013 in Mohali while captain Rohit Sharma takes the second spot with his knock of 177 against West Indies in 2013.

Former India cricketer Gundappa Viswanath take the fourth spot with a score of 137 against Australia in Kanpur in 1969. On the other hand, Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw takes the fifth spot with a score of 134 achieved against the West Indies in 2018.

Coming back to Jaiswal, the Uttar Pradesh-born batter earned his maiden call-up to the Indian Test team on the back of a record-breaking performance in IPL 2023. He sent record books for a toss as he registered the most number of runs in a season by an uncapped batter.

Jaiswal showed impeccable consistency by scoring 625 runs in IPL 2023

The Rajasthan Royals opener scored 625 runs in 14 innings at an average of 48.07 and a strike rate of 163.61 with one hundred and five fifties to his name. Apart from his IPL heroics, Yashasvi Jaiswal boasts a staggering average of 80.21 in First Class cricket with 1845 runs to his name which further made a strong case for his selection.

Meanwhile, India have extended their first innings lead to 210 as they were 360/4 after 132 overs with Virat Kohli (51*) and Ravindra Jadeja (2*) at the crease.
