Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa has denied any concerns over the team’s form coming into the T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 stage. The defending champions lost the recent three-match T20I series against England 2-0 at home and to add to the woes, the Men in Gold and Green lost a close game to India recently in one of the warm-up fixtures.
The Aaron Finch-led side did not have the best of times in the three-match T20I series in India as well towards the end of last month and it had raised a few eyebrows. Zampa, who was a big part of Australia’s successful campaign last year at the T20 World Cup, feels that his teammates will bring their A-game once the tournament starts.
The comments about being tired were probably taken in the wrong way almost: Adam Zampa
Zampa feels that the players have been focussed on the start of the World Cup and had brought down their intensity levels for the practice games as a matter of caution. He noted that his teammates have been waiting for the tournament opener and added that the trophy does bring a different kind of atmosphere in the side.
"I think the intensity of the cricket we've played recently has probably dropped slightly due to the fact we are keeping in mind how close the World Cup is," Zampa was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“And nothing gets the juices flowing like having a trophy there for the taking. We always want to perform our best when playing for Australia but think you'll see a few pumped boys for the World Cup.”
"Think the comments about being tired were probably taken in the wrong way almost...the guys have been waiting around for this game for a while now."
Zampa further mentioned that the Aussies will give their all for the trophy and added the importance of getting into form at the right time.
“Internally we all know T20 is a pretty fickle game. The worst that can happen is we don't win this thing, the best that can happen is that we defend our title at home at the MCG. Don't know if we are totally expected to win…but we do understand we should give it a red-hot crack. We have to earn the right to win it again. Last year we did that, we played some crucial cricket at crucial times [and] played our best cricket at the right time towards the end," he added.
