Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Virender Sehwag relive India's ODI World Cup 2011 winning campaign on its 14th anniversary
Indian ODI World Cup 2011 heroes Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Virender Sehwag relived their campaign on its 14th anniversary
On April 2, 2011, the Indian men's cricket team won the ODI World Cup and broke a major jinx. It was their first ODI WC win after lifting their maiden title in 1983. India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to chase 275 runs, the highest for a team in the history of the ODI WC to date. MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir played key roles in India's run chase.
One of the key members of the Indian WC winning campaign was Suresh Raina, who played crucial cameos in the Quarterfinal and the Semifinal against Australia and Pakistan respectively. The star player relived the 14th anniversary by posting about India's massive achievement on his social media handles.
"ON THIS DAY in 2011, India scripted history by winning the ICC Cricket World Cup! I still get goosebumps thinking about that iconic moment when MS Dhoni hit that six! But it wasn't just about one person, it was a team effort! Huge appreciation for the entire team's hard work, dedication & perseverance!" Raina wrote on X.
Virender Sehwag, India's opening batter, who did well from the first game to the semifinal against Pakistan, took to Twitter and expressed his happiness. The former Indian batter claimed it was a difficult win and highly significant for everyone. Sehwag hoped to see India winning its third ODI World Cup in the next two years.
"14 years ago #OnThisDay in 2011, we won the 50 over World Cup after 28 years. 42 years now and 2 World Cups. Shows how difficult it is and what a significant day it was for all of us to make the dream come true. A day I can never forget. Hoping we win the next one in 2 years," Sehwag wrote on X.
The Player of the Tournament, Yuvraj Singh, gave his views on India's win. He felt everyone in the team did it for billions of fans and for Sachin Tendulkar, who carried the Indian team for over two decades on his shoulders. He felt it wasn't just a win, but a way of thanking Sachin. Yuvraj felt the memory of India's win gives him goosebumps even after 14 years.
"April 2, 2011 — the night we did it for a billion people… and for one man who carried Indian cricket on his shoulders for over two decades. That World Cup wasn't just a win. It was a thank you to a legend. We grew up watching @sachin_rt. That night, we played to give him the moment he deserved. 14 years later, the memory of India's win still gives me goosebumps. A night we'll never forget," Yuvraj wrote.
