MI IPL History from 2008 to 2024: Stats, Records, Milestones, and More in Review

Mumbai Indians, the mere mention of the name makes a million fans smile at one of the most glorious teams in franchise history. When the team came into being, it was synonymous with being the home of Sachin Tendulkar. Despite having a lot of star names, Mumbai Indians failed to win the title for five years. 

Rohit Sharma was brought by the team during the IPL 2011 mega-auctions and the rest is history. In 2013, the wheels of fortune turned for Mumbai Indians team and its fans. Mumbai witnessed Rajasthan, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata lay claim to title the previous years.

The next decade IPL saw the rise of Mumbai Indians as the men in blue and gold realised their potential. With a strong scouting network, Mumbai Indians have given the national set-up players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

In this article, we roll back the years and look back at Mumbai Indians’ complete IPL journey:

IPL 2008 – The first foray and controversy:

Sachin Tendulkar’s injury meant that Harbhajan Singh led the side for the first few games of the season. Mumbai Indians saw their name embroiled in controversy when Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth after a game. This was the first time such an incident took place on the field and the MI skipper was banned for the season.

Sanath Jayasuriya was the leading scorer for Mumbai Indians with 514 runs which included a swashbuckling ton against CSK. One of the stats of that season of IPL saw Mumbai Indians bowl out KKR for 67 runs and this was the lowest total by a team in IPL 2008. 

IPL 2009 – Tale of misfortune:

The second IPL season saw the tournament being played in South Africa due to the 2009 Indian General Elections. It was a forgettable tournament for Sachin Tendulkar and his men as they finished seventh in the table. JP Duminy with 372 runs was the lead scorer while Lasith Malinga picked 18 wickets.

The silver lining for Mumbai Indians fans that season came against Kolkata Knight Riders. Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya added 127 runs for the first wicket to help their side post a huge total. This was the second-highest opening stand that year after the 135 by Graeme Smith and Swapnil Asnodkar for RR against Punjab.

IPL 2010 – First final and Sachin Tendulkar’s greatest moment:

After two underwhelming seasons, Mumbai Indians fought tooth and nail to land Kieron Pollard. The then 22-year-old star had impressed everyone with his 18-ball half-century for Trinidad and Tobago during the 2009 Champions League. The team reached its first final before losing to Chennai Super Kings at the DY Patil Stadium.

The season Sachin Tendulkar scored 618 runs which was the most by any player that year. The next best was by Jacques Kallis of Royal Challengers Bangalore who scored 572 runs. Tendulkar’s 618 runs also broke the two-year record of Shaun Marsh who had scored 616 runs. The master blaster’s tally of runs was the most by any player in IPL three year history.

IPL 2011 – Falling short of yet another final:

Sachin Tendulkar yet again led the side as he wanted to add yet another title to his name. India’s master blaster had just won the ODI World Cup with India just a few days earlier. Mumbai Indians finished third in the league table to qualify for the playoffs. After beating Kolkata in the eliminator, MI lost to RCB in the second knockout game.

Sachin Tendulkar scored his first and only IPL century that year against Kochi Tusker Kerala. This made the oldest IPL centurion of that year but sadly Mumbai Indians lost the match. That season the master blaster was the leading scorer for MI with Malinga picking 28 wickets which were the most in the history of IPL till then.

IPL 2012- Yet another heart-breaking season:

For the second year in a row, Mumbai Indians finished third in the table before losing to Chennai Super Kings in the eliminator. Rohit Sharma was the leading scorer for Mumbai Indians with 433 runs while Lasith Malinga picked 22 wickets.

In an interesting stat that season, Dwayne Smith came in for Mumbai Indians as the replacement player. During the game against Chennai, the men in blue and gold needed 14 runs from 3 balls. The West Indian hit Ben Hilfenhaus for six and two fours to win the game. This feat wrote Dwayne Smith’s name in IPL folklore for a long time to come.

IPL 2013 – First title win:

After years of waiting Mumbai Indians finally won their first IPL title in 2013. Ricky Ponting decided to relinquish his captaincy mid-season as Rohit Sharma took over. The skipper led the batting charts for MI with 528 runs. 

Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting became the oldest opening pair in that season of IPL. The IPL career of Sachin Tendulkar ended with a six against Amit Mishra as the master retired hurt himself on 38.

IPL 2014 – Abysmal title defense:

Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians came into the season having captured Michael Hussey from Chennai Super Kings. It needed Aditya Tare’s last ball six against Rajasthan Royals to help MI qualify for the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings avenged their final loss to dump MI out of the tournament.

Lendl Simmons was the leading scorer with the bat that season for Mumbai Indians with 390 runs. Mumbai Indians went into the hall of shame as they conceded 25 extras that year in a game against RCB. This was the highest conceded by the team during the IPL 2014 season.

IPL 2015 – Redemption and second IPL title:

Mumbai Indians began the 2015 IPL season with five losses from six games. Rohit Sharma and his side won the next five games before suffering a loss to RCB. Somehow they finished second in the table and beat Chennai in the playoffs and once again were in the finals. This was their second IPL title in three years in the most dramatic fashion.

Rohit Sharma’s 482 runs were the most runs by an MI batter while Lasith Malinga picked 24 wickets with the ball. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s score of 235 versus Mumbai Indians was the total that season.

IPL 2016 – Yet another disappointing campaign:

After the highs of winning the IPL 2015 title, Mumbai Indians crashed down to earth the next year. Rohit Sharma saw his side finish fifth in the table and miss the playoffs that season. The skipper yet again led the batting with 428 runs while Mitchell McClenaghan with 17 wickets was the leading wicket-taker. Mumbai Indians for the first time in six years hadn’t made it to the playoffs. 

IPL 2017 – Third title win in dramatic circumstances:

Mumbai Indians beat Rising Pune Super Giants by one run to win their third IPL title. It was a huge win for Rohit Sharma as he became the first-ever skipper to win three IPL titles. The one-run win was also the closest margin of win in an IPL final till date. Parthiv Patel was the lead scorer for MI with 395 runs while Bumrah picked 20 wickets during the season.

IPL 2018 – Falling short of qualifications:

Mirroring their 2018 season, Mumbai Indians finished fifth in the table and did not qualify for the playoffs. That year Suryakumar Yadav with 572 runs showed the world why he was re-acquired by his team. Hardik Pandya was the lead wicket-taker with 18 scalps as Chennai Super Kings won the title that season.

IPL 2019 – Fourth IPL title:

When Shardul Thakur missed a straight ball from Lasith Malinga, Nitin Menon had no hesitation to raise his finger. Mumbai Indians had beaten Chennai Super Kings for the third time in an IPL final to win their fourth crown. Quinton de Kock with 529 runs was the lead scorer while Bumrah’s 18 wickets were the most for MI. 

The 1-run was the second time a team had won an IPL final with such a margin. Mumbai Indians had done the same feat in 2017 against Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2017 final.

IPL 2020 – Fifth title win for Rohit Sharma:

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic saw IPL 2020 being shifted to UAE. Mumbai Indians didn’t break a sweat as they won the tournament with ease. Ishan Kishan with 516 runs became the leading scorer for MI while Bumrah picked 27 wickets with the ball.

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings became the first sides in IPL history to be involved in a double super-over. KL Rahul’s side won the contest as they kept their cool with the ball. Rohit Sharma also won his fifth IPL title the most by a skipper.

IPL 2021 – Champions make a quiet exit:

After winning two titles in successive years, Mumbai Indians finished fifth on the points table to miss qualifications for the playoffs. The season was so disappointing that Mumbai Indians' lead scorer Rohit Sharma was placed at No. 15 in the batting charts. With 235 versus SRH, Mumbai Indians scored the highest team total in IPL 2021.

IPL 2022 – Worst ever showing by Rohit Sharma and his side:

Five-time winners, Mumbai Indians had seen their stocks plummet during the IPL 2022 season. The former champions were out of the reckoning even before the halfway stage of the season could be reached. MI finished tenth in the table as CSK finished ninth to register their worst season in IPL history.

IPL 2023 – Signs of revival fall short:

Cameron Green, Piyush Chawla, and Akash Madhwal showed their talent to help the Mumbai Indians qualify for the playoffs. This was the first final appearance for them in two years. Suryakumar Yadav with 605 runs was the lead scorer for MI while Piyush Chawla was the highest wicket-taker. Akash Madhwal with figures of 5/5 against Lucknow Super Giants recorded the best bowling figures in IPL 2023. 

IPL 2024 – Can MI win their sixth title under new captain?

In 2024, Mumbai Indians have gone in with a new skipper in the form of Hardik Pandya. The 30-year-old was traded from Gujarat Titans for a huge amount of money. The removal of Rohit Sharma from the leadership role did not sit down well with many fans. Only time will tell if the decision to appoint Pandya as the skipper will yield results.
