The first week of the IPL has come to a conclusion following the game between DC and RR. As the tournament started with the game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, it has witnessed some great moments already. There have been good individual performances, great matches, some great moments between the players and the teams. While there is a lot to look forward to in the upcoming games, it is time to rate the teams based on their batting performances in the first week.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) — 9.5/10
SRH scored 204 while chasing 209 in their first match of the season against KKR. Despite losing the match, they were highly impressive as a batting unit. In the second match, against MI, they set a new record in the history of the IPL by scoring 277 runs. If they had won the first match, they were likely to have a perfect rating of 10 points.
2. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) — 9/10
In the first match of the season, CSK chased down a tricky total of 174 runs against RCB with eight balls to spare. In the second match against GT, they put forth a great batting performance and scored 206 runs on the board. Batting on a wicket like Chepauk, the batters of CSK were brilliant in the first week and deserve to be second in the list.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) — 9/10
In the first and only match of their season till now, KKR smashed 208 runs. Despite being reduced to 51/4 at one stage, the lower middle order batters made a mark with their batting performances. The likes of Ramandeep Singh, Phil Salt, and Andre Russell helped KKR to post a good total on the board against SRH at Eden Gardens.
4. Mumbai Indians (MI) — 8/10
Mumbai Indians have played two matches till now. In the first match, despite being in a good position to chase 169, the five-time champions choked and failed to chase down the total. They bounced back by registering 246 runs while chasing 278 against SRH, which is the highest score for a team batting second in the history of the league.
5. Rajasthan Royals (RR) — 8/10
Rajasthan Royals were good in the game against LSG. They posted a fantastic total of 193 runs on the board on a wicket which was dry. In the second match against DC, they batted first and posted a strong total on the board, courtesy of sublime display by Riyan Parag. With the knock at Jaipur, Parag has become the highest run-scorer for RR so far in the season, and second-highest overall.
6. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) — 7.5/10
RCB have won and lost a match each in the league in two games they have played till now. In the first match, they posted a challenging total of 173 runs on the board. While they lost against CSK, RCB won against PBKS by chasing 177. They have been one of the fewer sides to score more than 170 runs in both the matches in the first week of the IPL 2024.
7. Punjab Kings (PBKS) — 6.5/10
Punjab Kings have won and lost a game till now in the league. In the first match, they chased down a target of 175 against DC in their new home ground in Mullanpur. In the 2nd match, PBKS scored just 176 runs on the board on a good batting surface at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru against RCB, which has led to their low ratings.
8. Gujarat Titans (GT) — 6.5/10
GT have not been able to be at their best with the bat as a team. In the first match against MI, they managed to score only 168 runs. While the 2022 champions defended it, they were average with the bat against CSK, where they scored only 143 runs while chasing a mammoth total of 207 runs away from the home. They have not been able to cross the 170-run mark in the league till now.
9. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) — 6/10
LSG have played only one match till now. In the game against RR at Jaipur, LSG had to chase 194 runs to win the match. But the visiting side witnessed an early collapse which dented their chances in the match. Despite the efforts from Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul, LSG scored only 173 runs and lost the match by a margin of 20 runs.
10. Delhi Capitals (DC) — 5.5/10
DC have lost the only match they have played till now. At Mullanpur, Punjab's new home ground, the Capitals played their season opener. Batting first on a slow pitch, DC managed to score 174. Mitchell Marsh provided a fiery start at the top, and Abishek Porel provided the impetus in the death overs. In between, DC failed to up the ante as a batting unit. In the subsequent game, too, Delhi lost the match by 12 runs, courtesy of an underwhelming batting display.
