The Lucknow Super Giants picked up their first win of the IPL 2024, beating the Punjab Kings by 21 runs on Saturday. JioCinema IPL experts Shane Watson and Parthiv Patel analyzed the impressive performance of Mayank Yadav (3/27), who bowled a record 155.8 km/h delivery in the 11th over. LSG’s Nicholas Pooran (42 runs) spoke exclusively on ‘Match Centre Live;. Excerpts:
Nicholas Pooran spoke on his current form: It’s really nice. You guys would know, that when you’re batting nicely, it’s because of years of hard work, especially in T20 cricket. I am a child of T20 cricket. I started playing this at the age of 17. In my early years, I was really inconsistent, but I’ve always wanted to be the best version of myself. Learn from my mistakes, learn from the best batters in the world, and ask questions. I have mentors like Pollard, these guys know a lot about T20 cricket. They’re not shy to pick up the phone and call me to tell me when I’m wrong. Just having these guys around me to understand different situations, helps me to get better at my skill level.
Pooran also praised Mayank Yadav’s performance: He’s one of those guys who doesn’t know how to bowl slowly in the nets. I faced him once in the nets, he’s quick. I’m happy he was given the opportunity today and he’s going to be the talk of the town for the next couple of weeks.
Shane Watson spoke on Yadav’s pace: Wow. That’s what every team wants to discover: someone who can bowl fast and get world-class batters to jump around. After Jonny Bairstow faced two balls, he didn’t want too much of it. He started moving around and then Mayank got his wicket. It was incredible to watch those thunderbolts.
Parthiv Patel spoke on Yadav: He’s been bowling consistently over 150, so we can get carried away with the pace. But the accuracy he’s showing is the most important thing. You have to place the ball correctly at the correct length because if pace is your friend, it can be your enemy as well if batters use it against you. He didn’t give them any room and bowled tight deliveries. His length was neither too short nor too long, it was exactly where it needed to be. Being able to bowl deliveries at this pace in the right place is worth a lot of praise. When you’re debuting without much first-class experience, you can’t praise him enough.
