Jos Buttler's men will still be hungover from the celebrations of their T20 World Cup triumph when they take on Australia for the first of three ODIs at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, November 17. While the Three Lions won't be blamed for lacking motivation just 72 hours after reaching the high of winning the T20 WC, their rivals Australia will be hoping to bounce back from an abysmal campaign with a statement win.
The recently appointed ODI skipper Pat Cummins has the job of galvanizing his side for a series that is not part of the World Cup Super League. However, it marks the beginning of preparations for next year's World Cup in the subcontinent. It will be interesting to see how the Men in Yellow cope without their talismanic opener Aaron Finch, who retired from the format in the lead-up to the T20 WC.
Meanwhile, in contrast to their opponents, England will be buoyed by their triumph on Australian soil and will hope to replicate the same in the upcoming three-match series. Jos Buttler has had a patchy run with the bat in ODIs since taking over from Eoin Morgan earlier this year but will be boosted by their superior record in the 50-over format against their nemesis in the last five years.
Pitch Conditions
Anyone who watched the recently concluded T20 World Cup must be familiar with the shorter dimensions of the venue in Adelaide as Jos Buttler and Alex Hales made a mockery of India's total in the semis at this very ground. The bowlers will have to stick to fuller lengths in hopes of making the batter hit toward the longer straight boundaries. The team winning the toss would be inclined to bat on a surface that offers a bit of turn for the slower bowlers.
Playing Combinations for AUS vs ENG
Australia
The retirement of Aaron Finch has left big shoes to fill for the Australian selectors. However, they have got enough depth and experience in their batting line-up to see off the English attack. Steve Smith came under scrutiny for his poor outing in the shortest format of the game, while speedster Mitchell Starc was also controversially dropped from the T20I team. Both of them will have a point to prove in the upcoming series.
Predicted Playing XI: Travis Head, David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa
England
Jason Roy is back in the fray after missing out on the T20 World Cup and will be adamant about reclaiming his position in the limited-overs format. The core of the team is expected to be the same, with a couple of changes here and there.
Predicted Playing XI: Jason Roy, Phil Salt, James Vince, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Olly Stone
