Cricket is a great leveller, isn't it? Just a few days after winning the T20 World Cup in Melbourne, the Three Lions travelled to Adelaide, where they had thrashed India in the semi-finals and suddenly found themselves 1-0 down in the series against arch-rivals Australia.

If the 2021 season was any evidence of Australia coming charging back after a setback regardless of the format,  the first ODI at the Adelaide Oval was a clear indication of how genuine the statement was. The T20 after-effect was probably expected as England were not at their best, and the powerplay merely laid the groundwork for Australian domination. The Pat Cummins ODI era got off to a flying start, with the captain drawing first blood after setting up Phil Salt for back-of-the-length deliveries.

Life is prettier with Mitch they say? Starc was back to his best as he got in a searing inswinger to dismiss Jason Roy for six. The disaster didn't end as England were 31-3 in 7.1 overs.

Dawid Malan led the way for England with a batting masterclass at the Adelaide Oval, with several others contributing to a 287-run total. With Finch calling it time from ODIs earlier this year, Travis Head and David Warner opened for Australia and thumped authority against a second-string English attack.

Smith was back to his usual best, making runs with freedom after a few technical corrections, standing still, reacting to the ball coming down, keeping his shape and not trying to overhit and go through the ball and took the hosts home with over three overs to spare with a stunning unbeaten 80.

England will be hoping for a quick turnaround when they travel to the Sydney Cricket Ground with the series on the line and will eye a better batting performance, particularly in the powerplay. The Three Lions would look to show more intent with the ball against a slightly new Australian opening pair.

After convincingly winning the last two ODI series', the Aussies are now just a game away from wrapping up another series. The confidence will be high, especially at the SCG, as they have won the last four encounters at the venue. On the other hand, the visitors were the last team to beat Australia in Sydney.

Pitch Conditions

Sydney Cricket Ground is usually a high-scoring ground that is very much ideal for batting, especially under lights. The spinners get some bite and turn out of the surface and could come in handy and could be the go-to option in the middle overs.

Playing Combinations for AUS vs ENG

Australia

Australia's go-to speedster was rested in the Adelaide game as they went with the two spinning options, Agar and Zampa, and could play an unchanged XI as the SCG provides assistance and some bite out of the surface for the slow bowlers.

Predicted Playing XI: David Warner, Travis Head, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa

England

With Moeen Ali criticising workload management and the cricket schedule as England had to play a series within a week of winning the T20 World Cup, only four players were fielded at the Adelaide Oval, and with the series on the line, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, and Adil Rashid could all return to the XI at the SCG.

Predicted Playing XI: Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (c&wk), Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Adil Rashid
