Jos Buttler made a winning return to the English side as the visitors prevailed in a high-scoring thriller against Australia in the first of three T20Is Down Under. Jos Buttler and Alex Hales set up the win for their team after taking full advantage of a weakened Aussie bowling line-up in the series opener.

Meanwhile, Australia were in pole position in pursuit of England's massive total before a couple of crucial wickets in the death overs derailed their chase. Despite a lack of experience on the international stage, Nathan Ellis shone for the hosts, returning with exceptional bowling figures of 3/20, while his compatriots were tonked all around the ground.

The famed rivals will be at it once again in the second T20I at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on October 12. With the series on the line, expect another thrilling contest between two cricketing powerhouses.

Pitch Conditions

The surface at the Manuka Oval offers some assistance to the new ball bowlers, which is a given at most of the venues in the country. The pitch settles down quite nicely after the first few overs, with run-scorning becoming easier for the batters. The team winning the toss will likely opt to chase at the venue.

Playing Combinations for AUS vs ENG

Australia

Aaron Finch's ploy of sticking with Cameron Green has come undone for the third consecutive game, with questions being raised about his starting place since he is not in the squad for the T20 World Cup. David Warner looks in tremendous touch, and a blistering cameo by the returning Marcus Stoinis has further solidified their batting. The return of their famed fast bowling trio will challenge the English batters in the second T20I.

Predicted Playing XI: David Warner, Aaron Finch (c), Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa

England

The return of Jos Buttler and Mark Wood has made the visitors a formidable outfit in the format. While Butler bludgeoned the Aussie bowlers on his return, Wood was instrumental in their defense of the target. But the visitors will face a stern test in the second T20I against the outstanding Aussie pace battery.

Predicted Playing XI: Jos Buttler (c), Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Reece Topley
