Match 8 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a do-or-die clash as Afghanistan (AFG) takes on England (ENG) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, on Wednesday, February 26. Both teams are coming off heavy defeats in their opening game and must secure a win to stay alive in the competition.

Afghanistan suffered a disappointing 107-run loss against South Africa in Karachi. Chasing 316, their batting lineup collapsed despite Rahmat Shah’s fighting innings of 92-ball 90. Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada ran through the Afghan side, bowling them out for 208 in 43.3 overs. Earlier, South Africa’s top order had an impressive day, with Ryan Rickelton (103), Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (50*) guiding their team to 315/6.

England, on the other hand, experienced a frustrating defeat against Australia. Ben Duckett’s sensational 165 off 143 balls helped them post 351/8. Joe Root also chipped in with 68, but English bowlers failed to defend the total. Josh Inglis (120* off 86) led Australia’s chase with ease, well supported by Alex Carey (69) and Glenn Maxwell’s 32* off 15.

Meanwhile, the loser of this match will be on the brink of elimination. Afghanistan had earlier stunned England in the 2023 ODI World Cup with a 69-run win in Delhi, proving they can be impressive against top sides. However, England will take confidence from the batting-friendly conditions in Lahore and their better pace attack. If dew comes into play, chasing could become easier, as was seen in their loss to Australia.

Pitch Report

Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium's pitch is a batting paradise, and offers little help to bowlers, making it a difficult venue for defending totals. The recent Australia versus England clash proved how tough it can be for bowlers. England posted 351, yet Australia chased it down with ease. In the upcoming game, both teams will be looking to chase. The outfield is quick, and if batters don’t make the most of it, then they only have themselves to blame.
