Rajat Patidar's captain's knock paved the way for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to post a commendable total of 196/7 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, March 28.
After winning the toss, Ruturaj Gaikwad opted to bowl first, reckoning that the pitch would be better for batting than the previous game against Mumbai Indians. The CSK skipper's assessment turned out to be true as Phil Salt got his team off to a blazing start, with the new ball coming onto the bat nicely.
Salt bludgeoned his way to 32 off 16 balls in a 45-run partnership with Virat Kohli. The England wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Noor Ahmad in the fifth over after MS Dhoni effected a lightning-fast stumping. Devdutt Padikkal came out with a positive frame of mind and did not let the momentum slip after Salt's dismissal. The southpaw hit two fours and as many sixes to score 27 off 14 balls.
After Padikkal lost his wicket to Ravichandran Ashwin, RCB captain Rajat Patidar joined Kohli at the crease. The former India skipper was struggling to break the shackles before Matheesha Pathirana hit him on the helmet with a bouncer to start the 11th over. Kohli came back strongly by hitting the Sri Lankan speedster for a six and four on the next two deliveries.
Patidar was dropped thrice in two overs, but Kohli wasn't as lucky as his captain. The 36-year-old was dismissed for 31 off 30 balls by Noor. Patidar made CSK pay for their fielding lapses as he smashed 51 off just 32 balls. Jitesh Sharma played a fine little cameo, but it was Tim David, who helped RCB to finish on a high by smashing three sixes in the last over off Sam Curran.
After the end of the first innings, Noor, who finished with figures of 3/36 in four overs, noted that the pitch did not yield much turn for the spinners. He also acknowledged the presence of a wicketkeeper as great as Dhoni behind the stumps.
Truly grateful for the Purple Cap and hopefully I keep it till the end of the tournament. The pitch was a little different, there wasn't much turn and I wanted to bowl length deliveries. I feel lucky to have him (Dhoni) behind the stumps. The wicket looks better, we need a good start and we will chase it down. Everyone will enjoy it (getting Kohli's wicket)," Noor said while speaking to the official broadcaster.
