Sri Lanka's hopes of direct qualification to this year's ODI World Cup took a big dent after the Asian outfit were comprehensively beaten by the Kiwis in the series opener. A depleted New Zealand team batted first in the opening ODI of the series and posted a par total of 274 runs, despite several Kiwi batters making bright starts in the match.
The Sri Lankan bowlers kept chipping at the wickets at regular intervals to keep the home side in check at all times. Although the target wasn't that stiff, the visitors lost heaps of wickets in the powerplay. Henry Shipley and Blair Tickner were imperious with the new ball and the former went on to register his maiden five-for in ODI cricket.
Sri Lanka lost half their side inside the first ten overs of the chase and never recovered from their horrible start, finishing with an embarrassing total of 76 runs to hand their opponents a routine victory. Apart from veteran batter Angelo Matthews, none of the Sri Lankan batters managed to breach the 15-run mark in the match.
While the Kiwi pacers were impressive with the new ball, Sri Lanka did not help their cause as several batters threw their wickets away in a haphazardous chase. Dasun Shanaka will hope for better application for his batters when the two sides meet in the decisive second ODI in Christchurch on Tuesday, March 28.
Pitch & Conditions:
The surface in Christchurch is pretty similar to that of the other venues in the country. The seamers will get a fair bit of assistance with the new ball but once the pitch settles, the batters can enjoy their time in the middle as the pitch offers even bounce and carry.
Probable Playing XIs for NZ vs SL, 2nd ODI:
New Zealand
Henry Shipley's maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs will please the Blackcaps as they usher into a new era of fast bowlers. Meanwhile, Tom Latham will want substantial contributions from his middle-order batters in the upcoming encounter.
Probable Playing XI: Henry Nicholls, Chad Bowes, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (c & wk), Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry, Blair Tickner
