South Africa were annihilated in the first T20I in Durban, losing by a whopping 111 runs against Australia. The home side will hope to come back strongly in the series in the do-or-die second T20I at the same venue on Friday, September 1.

Aiden Markram won the toss in the first T20I and opted to bowl first as he was not sure about the wicket. Australia posted a mammoth 226/6 on the board thanks to destructive knocks from Mitchell Marsh (92* off 49) and Tim David (64 off 28). The Proteas were playing after 148 days, and it showed in their performance as the bowlers dished out several full tosses, and accuracy had gone for a swing. In reply, Reeza Hendricks scored a half-century, but no other batter managed to do the heavy lifting required to chase such a huge target.

The tourists had four debutants on their side, all showing glimpses of their potential. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who was a last-minute replacement for Adam Zampa, impressed fans and experts on debut with his guile and deception, finishing a four-for.

South Africa have no other option but to bounce back and win the second T20I, as another loss would help Australia take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Markram will have to inspire his men to improve in all three aspects of the game against a confident Aussie side.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch at Kingsmead, Durban, was a belter. South Africa's dismal batting show had nothing to do with the surface as they threw their wickets away under the pressure of a humongous target. Their batters will get another chance to redeem themselves, as the pitch is expected to be ideal for batting once again.

Probable Playing XI For SA vs AUS

South Africa

The hosts might not look to make too many changes after just one bad game. However, they could be tempted to bring in the experienced Keshav Maharaj in place of Gerald Coetzee. The destructive Donavon Ferreira might have to wait a little longer before he makes his debut.

Probable Playing XI: Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram (C), Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs (wk), Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee/Keshav Maharaj, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi

Australia

There is no reason for the former T20 World Cup champions to tinker with their playing XI from the first T20I after such a comprehensive performance. Zampa, who was ill and couldn't play the match, might get into the side if he recovers in time. South Africa struggled against Tanveer Sangha, and the option of attacking with two leg-spinners might interest Mitchell Marsh.

Probable Playing XI: Matt Short, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh (C), Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott/Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Spencer Johnson
