With Australia’s narrow win over Afghanistan, Sri Lanka are now out of contention to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup while England with a win will topple the Aussies who are currently occupying the second spot and will qualify for the next round. The picture of the net run rate (NRR) is also out of the equation and thus it indeed is a virtual quarter-final for the Three Lions.
As the match will be played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the conditions will surely favour the Lankan spinners. Wanindu Hasaranga, who’s currently the leading wicket-taker in the tournament can cause some damage as the English batters are not very comfortable on spin-friendly tracks. The likes of Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali can play spin well but they too will be under pressure to get the much-needed win.
When it comes to their batting, Kusal Mendis has led the attack. The opener has smashed 205 runs so far in the tournament and before bowing out, will look to send a statement to the cricketing world. Other batters have contributed from time to time but when it comes to consistency, the team has suffered.
Now, coming to England, they were one of the favourites to clinch the trophy before the start of the tournament. However, they haven't lived up to their expectations. Even though they have only lost to Ireland so far, Jos Buttler and company didn't outclass any of their opponents. Even though they almost scored 180 in their last match against New Zealand, their batting order didn't look convincing.
The bowlers have done a decent job so far and played an instrumental role in England’s success. Sam Curran with nine wickets is the seventh leading wicket-taker in the tournament and has been phenomenal so far. He is someone who can create a difference against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Pitch Conditions
The surface at Sydney will definitely favour the spinners for the major part of the match. The team winning the toss will look forward to field first and anything below 160 will be a good target to chase.
