In the first ODI of the three-match series against West Indies, India skipper Rohit Sharma made some unusual changes in the batting order, which saw him coming out to bat at number seven, while Virat Kohli did not get a chance to come out to bat. Stating the reason behind the move, the 36-year-old mentioned giving chances to the middle order batters, as they don’t get enough opportunities.

Meanwhile, even though the cricketers got some much-needed game time, they failed to make a mark. Shubman Gill’s rough patch continues while Suryakumar Yadav is yet to make a mark in the 50-overs format. Thus, there are way too many concerns regarding India’s batting at the moment. Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, hit 52 runs off 46 deliveries and with that, he remains in the fight to make it to the ODI World Cup squad and hence, Gill has some catching up to do.

India’s bowling meanwhile looks sorted at the moment. Kuldeep Yadav was phenomenal in the first ODI, picking up four wickets while Ravindra Jadeja picked up three. The spinners will once again be key and it will be interesting if the team management brings up Yuzvendra Chahal in the mix as he can prove to be deadly.

When it comes to West Indies, there is a lot of room for improvement at the moment. Their batting unit once again failed to deliver and nothing seems going in their favour. Gudakesh Motie tried to create some sort of impact but the batters didn’t give him enough runs to defend. They lack a bit of motivation as well and hence, the team management will have to step up in order to bring some momentum back.

Pitch and conditions

The wicket at the Kensington Oval is expected to favour the spinners. The team winning the toss should bowl first and anything over 260 runs will be a good score on the surface.
