Australia lock horns with Sri Lanka in match No. 5 of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2024 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Saturday, October 5.

Defending champions Australia will be helmed by Alyssa Healy, who took charge after the inspirational Meg Lanning hung her boots from the game in November last year. While there has been a change in captaincy, Australia's domination in women's cricket hasn't subsided whatsoever

The Women in Yellow have won 10 out of the 12 T20Is they have played in 2024. In the warm-up matches leading into the marquee event, Australia defeated England and the West Indies by 33 and 35 runs, respectively. The Aussies have all bases covered in their squad and the players would want to adapt quickly to the sluggish conditions in the UAE.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have already played their opening game in the tournament. They were outplayed by Pakistan as the Chamari Athapaththu-led side lost by 31 runs in the pursuit of a gettable 117-run target.

The Women's Asia Cup champions would want to forget the debacle and bounce back strongly as there is very little room for slip-ups in the tough group which also comprises teams like Australia, India, and Pakistan.

Pitch Report

The two games played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 produced low-scoring encounters. Teams batting first won both the games. Batting first could be the better option as the pitch tends to get slower as the game progresses. The top-order might look to go after the bowlers inside the powerplay to make use of the field instructions and the hard new ball. As the ball gets older, batters will have to grind it out in the middle.

Probable Playing XIs

Australia Women

Australia have a very balanced side at their disposal as they have a lot of all-rounders among the 15 players picked. Spinners Ashleigh Gardner, Sophie Molineux, and Alana King will be looking to use the conditions to their advantage and pick up crucial wickets. Meanwhile, Megan Schutt will be the pacer to watch out for in this clash.

Predicted XI: Alyssa Healy (c & wk), Beth Mooney, Elysse Perry, Ash Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Grace Harris, Georgia Wareham, Annabel Sutherland, Sophie Molineux, Megan Schutt

Sri Lanka Women

Sri Lanka could give an opportunity to 15-year-old Shashini Gimhani in this game as she can look to bamboozle the mighty Aussies with her left-arm wrist spin. She will have a mystery element as the Aussies haven't faced her before. Other than this, Sri Lanka would not look to tinker with their side after just one defeat.

Predicted XI: Vishmi Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu (c), Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshi De Silva, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Sachini Nisansala, Sugandika Kumari, Inoshi Priyadharshani/Shashini Gimhani, Udeshika Prabodhani
