Day 2 of the all-exciting ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 saw four teams clashing in two matches of the Super Six stage. India played neighbours Sri Lanka (Group 1) in the first contest of the day whereas West Indies locked horns with Rwanda (Group 2) in the second match.
Interestingly, fans witnessed low-scoring games in both matches of the marquee event played on Sunday in Potchefstroom. Speaking about the first match, the Women in Blue were reeling from a loss to Australia in the previous match and required a win against the Islanders in the second contest to get back on track in the competition.
Despite their disappointing outing against the Aussies, team India relished a dominating win over Sri Lanka, winning the contest by 7 wickets. A disciplined bowling performance by the Indian bowling unit toppled the rival side and sent them packing for mere 59 runs in their 20 overs.
Lankan skipper Vishmi Gunaratne was the highest run-getter of the side with 25 runs and the only other batter apart from Umaya Rathnayake (13 runs) to attain a double-digit score. In response to the low-scoring total, India skipper Soumya Tiwari’s unbeaten 28-run knock coupled with Shafali Verma’s 15 runs and Shweta Sehrawat’s 13 runs wrapped up the contest.
Rwanda stun West Indies in the other game
In the second and final game of the day, a similar sort of a match-up was witnessed between Rwanda and the Caribbean nation. Opting to bat first, West Indies swiftly regretted the decision as the side skittled out for just 70 runs in 16.3 overs of the clash.
Opener Realeanna Grimmond, the only batter with a double-digit score, was dismissed for 18 runs before the rest of the batting unit collapsed as the side concluded with a paltry total. It is worth mentioning that Marie Tumukunde and Sylvia Usabyimana’s four-wicket haul each wrapped up the Windies' batting innings.
With the low-scoring total to chase, Rwanda too lost their openers early, however, skipper Gisele Ishimwe’s delicate knock of 31 runs from 53 balls steered the side to register their first win in the Super Six.
