NZ-W vs AUS-W 2025, 2nd WT20I Review: Mooney, bowlers deliver another emphatic win for Australia, seal series
Australia Women won the match by 82 runs.
New Zealand Women (NZ-W) hosted Australia Women (AUS-W) for the second match of the three-game T20I series at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Sunday, March 23. Australia won the toss and elected to bat first.
The openers, Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll, began the innings in the same way as they did in the first match. Both struck boundaries with ease as the pair helped the team cross the 50-run mark without losing any wicket. Voll (36 off 20) was the first to be dismissed as Australia finished the powerplay at 67/1. Phoebe Litchfield joined Mooney and the pair did not let the momentum to dwindle. They formed a 69-run partnership off 49 balls before Litchfield (32 off 29) was caught, dismissed by a combination of Kerr sisters.
All-rounder Elysse Perry came out to bat and continued in the same vein as the others. At the other end, Mooney was going strong, allowing a two-pronged attack from the team. She was eventually dismissed in the 17th over for 70 runs off 42 balls, hitting 11 fours. Sutherland (23* off 15) and Perry (29* off 15) provided a boost at the death, finishing the innings at 204/3. For New Zealand, Sophie Devine (1/38), Jess Kerr (1/39) and Amelia Kerr (1/27) were the only wicket-takers.
New Zealand suffered early setbacks in their pursuit of 205. They lost three wickets in the powerplay and one more soon after which effectively derailed their chase. At 45/4 after 6.1 overs, it was a steep uphill task for the home team. Amelia Kerr (40 off 36) anchored the innings but she did not receive much support to even pose a challenge to the Aussie bowlers. Maddy Green combined with her, contributing 22 runs. Apart from these two, there were not any notable contributions.
Most of the visitors' bowlers were on the money throughout. Eventually, New Zealand were all out for 122, losing the match by 82 runs. Annabel Sutherland, 4/8 from 2.1 overs, was clearly the standout bowler. Alana King (3/27), Darcie Brown (2/23), and Georgia Wareham (1/15) were the other wicket-takers.
With this win, Australia take an unassailable lead of 2-0 and notably win their first T20I series in New Zealand. The last match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 26 at Sky Stadium, Wellington.
