SL vs AUS 2025: Australia comprehensively complete Lankan whitewash in Galle
Australia ended the Second Test at Galle on Day four beating Sri Lanka by nine wickets and achieving a clean sweep against the hosts.
Australia achieved a clean sweep in Sri Lanka as they emerged victorious in the second Test. This was another performance from the Aussies, who made sure that they kept their dominance throughout the Test match with both bat and ball. The match ended on Day 4, and the visitors finished their last series of the World Test Championship cycle on a high.
The Steve Smith-led side was already in control from the third day itself, finishing with a total of 414 and had them at a score of 211/8 at the end of the day. It did not take much time for the Aussies to bowl out the Lankans in the second innings as the team was finally bundled out for 231 runs and the Baggy Greens in the end needed just 75 runs to win the game and whitewash the Lankan Lions at home.
A score of 75 was not much of a challenge for the Australians as they chased it down without much hesitation and chased down the score with the loss of just a solitary wicket of Travis Head and won the game by nine wickets with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne still at the crease. After a series to remember, the Australians will look to end the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle by defending their title in the finale at Lord's against South Africa.

Being a stand-in skipper, Smith donned the role to perfection in Pat Cummins' absence, not only leading them to a series clinch, but also scoring two centuries in the series to become the second-highest run-getter, only behind opener Usman Khawaja. The New South Wales batter formed significant partnerships with Khawaja and Alex Carey, who were the Player of the Match in the first and second games, respectively. This was enough to adjudge him as the Player of the Series as well.
For veteran spinner Nathan Lyon, the series ended on a fruitful note with 14 wickets to his tally. Lyon also achieved another milestone in the longer format, completing 550-plus wickets in Test cricket, but this is the series where young left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was the best bowler in series taking a total of 16 wickets in the two games he had played.
