The Trent Rockets Women got the better of Welsh Fire by eight wickets in Match 21 of The Hundred Women’s 2022 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Monday, August 28. It was a total mismatch as a contest between two teams who have had contrasting results throughout the season.
While the victory has helped the Trent Rockets in getting to the third spot having won three out of six matches with six points to their tally with an NRR of + 0.101, the Welsh Fire continue to languish at the seventh position in the points table having managed just a solitary win from the six games that they have played so far and only have two points to their tally at a dismal net run rate of -0.681.
Trent Rockets outclass Welsh Fire
The coin landed in the favor of the Welsh Fire skipper Tammy Beaumont and she elected to bat first. Even though it was the right decision, the Welsh batters failed to execute their plans as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Most of their scorers could not prolong their innings despite getting set while the others got out in single digits.
Only wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce (23) and middle-order batter Nicola Carey (27) showed some resistance in what otherwise was a sorry-looking scorecard for the Welsh Fire as they were restricted to 100/8.
For Trent Rockets Bryony Smith (2/14), Katherine Brunt (2/14) and Nat Sciver (2/22) were the picks of the bowlers while Australian spin sensation Alana King took a wicket as well.
In reply, the Trent Rockets lost the key wickets of Smith and Sciver for single digit scores, but captain Elyse Villani tormented the Welsh bowling line up and did not allow them to settle down with her whirlwind innings.
Villani went on to score an unbeaten 55 runs off 40 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of 137.50 including eight fours and a six. The skipper got some much-needed support from South African middle-order sensation Mignon du Preez who also remained not out on a 32-ball 20 at a strike rate of exactly 160.
Their unbeaten 64-run stand for the third wicket helped the Rockets get over the line with 18 balls to spare. For the Welsh Fire, Alex Hartley and Lauren Filer starred in the wickets column with a scalp each.
