WI-W vs BAN-W 2025, 1st WODI Review: All-round Hayley Matthews lifts West Indies 1-0 up
West Indies Women won the first ODI in Basseterre by nine wickets on Sunday, January 19.
West Indies registered an emphatic nine-wicket win in the first ODI against Bangladesh at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts on January 19, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
After being put into bat first, the visitors started cautiously. Sharmin Akhter (42 off 70) and Murshida Khatun (40 off 53) added 44 runs for the second wicket after Bangladesh lost Fargana Hoque eary in the innings. However, hosts skipper Hayley Matthews turned the game, dismissing both set batters during her spell of 2/41 in 10 overs.
The middle order was carried by Sobhana Mostary (35 off 50) and Shorna Akter (29 off 38), who tried to steady the innings, but regular wickets hampered the scoring rate. Deandra Dottin (3/40) and Aaliyah Alleyne (2/22) further dented Bangladesh’s hopes as they were restricted to merely 198/9 in 50 overs.
West Indies made light work of the 199-run chase courtesy of a captain’s knock by Matthews. The 26-year-old smashed an unbeaten 104 off just 93 balls, lacing her innings with 16 fours. Her opening partner, Qiana Joseph, complemented her brilliantly with 70 off 79 balls, which included six boundaries and four sixes.
The duo put on a massive 163-run opening stand, ending the game in just 31.4 overs. Shemaine Campbelle's unbeaten 14 helped to see the chase through. Bangladesh’s Rabeya Khan was the sole wicket-taker, dismissing Joseph after a good catch by the substitute fielder.
